Join the Friends of Jockey's Ridge at Jockey's Ridge State Park for a marine debris cleanup and beach sweep at the Soundside beach access. Jockey's Ridge State Park Ranger Austin Paul will lead this volunteer opportunity alongside other environmental stewards of the park. Help us protect the tallest active sand dune system on the east coast.

Where to Park:
Please park at the Jockeys' Ridge State Park Soundside Beach Access at 330 W. Soundside Road, Nags Head

Where to Meet: 
Ranger Austin Paul will meet all volunteers at the Soundside Beach Access parking lot.

What to Bring: Please be prepared with sunscreen as needed and water for hydration. If weather allows, some marine debris cleanup time will be spent in the shallow water of the sound.

This volunteer opportunity is part of Outer Banks Volunteer Week (October 10-17, 2026)

Work alongside Extension Master Gardener Volunteers to take care of the plants at the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden, a 4-acre public garden with walking trails and demonstration gardens.  Tasks may include raking paths, watering plants, weeding vines, clearing trails, picking up deadwood, and/or removing invasive plants.  Tasks will be matched to volunteer’s interests and abilities.  Wear close-toed shoes and dress for gardening work.  Insect repellent is suggested.  Bring a reusable water bottle.

Volunteer with Island Farm for our 15th annual Pumpkin Patch! This year’s Pumpkin Patch will feature plenty of pumpkins – grown locally in Chowan County by a descendant of Island Farm in Manteo, North Carolina.

Volunteers are an integral part of this event, helping with event logistics like Parking and staffing our Information Booth, tending to heritage animals like chickens and sheep, and assisting staff with activities like popcorn popping and craft making. 

Pumpkin Patch is 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteer shifts are 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Pumpkin Patch dates are the first four Saturdays in October — Oct 3, 10, 17, and 24. This sign up list is for the AFTERNOON. Please see the MORNING list for morning volunteer shifts. 

Volunteers receive a free Pumpkin Patch t-shirt and are welcome to enjoy the event before/after the duration of their volunteer shift!

With Labor Day weekend marking the end of peak summer, our beaches will see heavy foot traffic—and unfortunately, a lot of leftover litter. As the crowds pack up, this is one of the most critical times of the year for a targeted cleanup. We’re encouraging everyone to help out during or immediately following Labor Day weekend (September 5–8) to stop debris from going into the ocean.

Please join the Outer Banks Relief Foundation for a Beach Clean Up at Glenmere Avenue Beach Access. This beach cleanup is part of the 2nd Annual Outer Banks Volunteer Week, offering several opportunities for visitors, residents and second homeowners to connect more deeply with the community by volunteering with local organizations on a variety of projects and events. Very special thanks to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau for hosting Outer Banks Volunteer Week once again! Ready to enjoy some crisp fall weather and help keep Manteo beautiful? Join us for the Town of Manteo Fall Litter Pick-Up on Saturday, November 14th at George Washington Creef Park. 

We'll kick things off at 8:45 with some yummy donuts to fuel your efforts before heading out with friends and family to help give our community a fall refresh! All litter pick-up supplies will be provided.

This event is held in honor of Rodney "Crow" Murray, a long-time Town of Manteo employee.

Join the Island Farm team each Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday to help care for our heritage livestock, including sheep, chickens, oxen, Banker ponies, and mule. Volunteers will assist staff with:

Prior experience working with farm animals is preferred, but not required. This is a hands-on volunteer role and you will work closely with staff to take care of our heritage livestock! This is a reoccurring opportunity and a great way to support the operations of a working farm while gaining hands-on experience with heritage breeds.

All activities take place outdoors. Please bring a snack, a reusable water bottle, and wear close-toed shoes. Feel free to bring any additional items that help make your time at Island Farm festive and enjoyable (personal medication, hat, sunglasses, etc).

FAQ

Where will activities take place?
Island Farm is an agro-tourism site — there is the potential to come into contact with hazards inherently associated with the outdoors, such as spiders, ants, mosquitoes, poison ivy, and snakes. Please be prepared for all activities to take place outdoors.

What should I wear?

Attire should be appropriate for the outdoors. Close-toed shoes required. Long sleeve shirt, long pants, and hat recommended. Lightweight clothing/sports attire recommended to be comfortable and capable during your shift.

Are volunteer shifts family-friendly?
Yes. Volunteer shifts are family-friendly. Volunteers must be 10 years or older and accompanied by a legal adult for the duration of the volunteer shift.

Meet Me In Manteo! Do you love to talk to people about the great Town of Manteo? We are looking for friendly greeters. The greeter will talk with visitors and answer any questions they might have about what the Town has to offer. 

Meet Me In Manteo! We are seeking a social media ambassador to assist with content creation for our website and social media channels. Schedule is flexible! Ideal opportunity for someone looking for volunteer hours.

Meet Me In Manteo! We are looking for ambassadors to visit downtown businesses to verify contact information to update our directory. Stop in at Manteo Town Hall and pick up the existing directory. Ambassador can select which days and hours to contact the businesses. Information can be gathered via phone or in person.

The Aquarium Projects Team consists of local volunteers that assist with various projects that do not require working with visitors. The nature of available projects will vary based on the needs of the aquarium and the skills of the volunteers that are a part of the Aquarium Projects Team. Projects include, but are not limited to sewing, education prop creation, language translation service, A/V projects, graphic design, 3D printing, fabrication, engineering, plumbing, carpentry and general maintenance tasks.

Projects will be assigned to Aquarium Projects Team volunteers based on those volunteers’ unique skillset and availability.

We are seeking enthusiastic and engaging local volunteers that are wanting to be helpful by doing the following tasks:  safely operating a golf cart on Aquarium property to transport customers with mobility needs; directing traffic in the parking lots (main lots and the grass overflow lots) on busy days; assisting VS & Security staff in the ticket line directing customers to appropriate ticket windows; working the Guest Services desk in the main lobby to answer guest questions, sign out wheelchairs, and allow entry to the Privacy Room; Assisting guests with completing membership applications when possible; answering VS phones as needed.
